Monsignor Demetrio Fernández González

Bishop of Cordoba

The Cathedral is the "alma mater" of the diocese, its mother church and the core of its religious life.It is also the episcopal seat since it is where the chair of the Bishop is to be found. In the celebration of the Catholic liturgy the chair is conceived as a symbol of the apostolic ministry and of the faith of the Church. It is represented by a solemn chair, positioned on the main altar, from where the Bishop presides over the celebrations and preaches to the faithful

"The Cathedral Church is that in which the Bishop has the chair, a sign of the teaching and power of the pastor of the particular church, also as a sign of the unity of the believers in that faith, which the Bishop announces as pastor of the flock" (Ceremonial of Bishops, no. 42)

Welcome to the Mosque-Cathedral Monumental Site of Cordoba

Every diocesan community has its Cathedral, its main church, its church of reference. In this church everyone is called to celebrate the Christian mysteries and form part of a living community walking the path to meet the Lord. It is called a Cathedral because it has the Chair of the Bishop, from where the Bishop presides in the name of Christ the Eucharist and from where the Bishop preaches the Gospel and guides the faithful along the path of Christian salvation.

Welcome to this virtual visit to the Mosque-Cathedral Monumental Site of Cordoba, which creates a desire to come for a real visit, for the opportunity to walk through its doors, between its columns, contemplate its vaults, to be lit up by the light flooding in from its Main Chapel. Built for Muslim worship in the 9th century, on the foundations of an old Christian basilica, it was conquered by the Catholic King Fernando III "the Saint" (1236) and delivered to the Christian community that populated the city.

For almost eight centuries it has been a Cathedral offering uninterrupted Catholic worship, it is a living church, one that has remained in good condition and has been continuously renovated so that today we can enjoy it as a place consecrated to God, a space for liturgical celebrations, as a common house that welcomes all of the faithful who come here, as a place of protection and coming together.

From the portal of this website you can gain an idea of the beauty and uniqueness of this monument. I invite you to visit it. The Cathedral Chapter, responsible for its management and development, will welcome you and provide you with the means to enjoy this jewel of Byzantine and Muslim art.

We hope that for you it will be a place of peace, of meeting God on the path of beauty. We hope that you will enjoy its harmony and be keen to return time and time again. We look forward to welcoming you.
